Summary

Terowie main street, looking south. Terowie was founded as a private venture by John A Mitchell who built a public house on the main road near the Inkermann Mine. By 1875 there were seven houses in a row. By 1880 there were 2 stores, 2 butchers, bakery, saddlery, bootmaker, 3 blacksmiths, hotel, 2 chapels, Institute, and a railway station. This photograph shows the main street lined with businesses and a lone car parked at the kerb. John A Mitchell donated the land on which the Institute was built.
