Elder Park
Rotunda at Elder Park looking west. The Torrens is in the background, along with Long's Boat Sheds on the oppisite bank. The railway bridge across the Torrens can be seen in the distance. Railway yards can be seen behind the Rotunda. The Rotunda was donated by Sir Thomas Elder and was built in Glasgow and shipped in 1882. It was officially opened on November 28, 1882 which was more than a year since the weir and lake were finished. Another photograph on the reverse side shows the Rotunda in the distance. The photograph has been taken from the city end of King William Road looking north towards North Adelaide.
Government House
[General description] Government House, partially obscured by trees is viewed from across the North Terrace/ King William Street intersection. The guardhouse is recently constructed. [On back of photograph] 'Government House 1872-78' (Another hand) 'Guard house erected in 1873 at cost of 460 Pounds. Vide A.M.C. 5/6/1953'.
Government House
Government House, Adelaide showing the east wing with shuttered windows. A distinguished looking gentleman wearing a top hat is standing in the doorway. This part of Government House known as the east front was begun in 1838 and completed in 1840. It is the earliest surviving example of a Regency building in Adelaide.
Government Printing Office
Government Printing Office, Adelaide. Corner of North Terrace and King William Road, Looking north west from the Adelaide Club, North Terrace. The entrance to Government House can be seen on the right of the photograph. The City Baths can be seen further down King William Road on the western side as the road dips down towards the River Torrens. The curved roofs of the Adelaide Railway Station can be seen on the left of the photograph. There is a large turning circle in the middle of the intersection where horse drawn vehicles make regular turns. The photograph was presented by Mrs H Coultas. On the reverse of this photograph is attached a duplicate copy of B 941 which depicts the Adelaide Bridge around the 1880's (also presented by Mrs H Coultas).
Adelaide Hospital
[General description] The Adelaide Hospital complex is two storey and built of stone, with arched windows and cloistered verandahs. The two towers, which are a feature of this building, have been incorporated into the present day Coat of Arms of the hospital. The central block and the west wing of this hospital was completed in September, 1856, and the east wing was built in 1866-67. The Hospital garden and part of the Botanic Gardens appear in the foreground whilst open parkland and roofs of North Adelaide are seen in the background. Adelaide Hospital
Adelaide Hospital complex is two storeys tall and built of stone with arched windows and cloistered verandahs. The two towers which are a feature of the building have been incorporated into the Coat of Arms for the hospital. The central block and the western wing were completed in September 1856, while the eastern wing was built in 1866-67. This photograph shows a lady in a fine carriage waiting outside the hospital gates.
Adelaide Hospital
The foundation stone for the Adelaide Hospital on North Terrace in the Adelaide Parklands was laid in 1840. This photograph shows the sweeping path behind the hospital in the parklands. The park is planted with trees, bushes and flower beds.

Members of Adelaide Rifles
Members of Adelaide Rifles outside the Mounted Police Barracks. The Adelaide Rifle Company was established in 1840 with headquarters in King William Street. Initially 77 volunteers enlisted and were organised into two cavalry troops and one company of infantry. At the time of this photograph an Act established a permanent force supplemented by experienced volunteers. 1000 men were raised and officers and drill instructors were obtained from England for purposes of instruction, discipline and organisation. North Terrace
North Terrace looking east from the Adelaide Club. The stately buildings on the northern side of North Terrace can be seen including Institute, Library and Museum. A wide garden and walkway can be seen running along the length of Government House wall. That area is almost as wide as North Terrace itself.

North Terrace
[General description] View west along North Terrace from in front of Government House, behind the railings which run along the north side of North Terrace. On the left is the old Parliament House, on the left is the Gresham Hotel. In the centre of the street two cabs are standing, the horses eating from their nosebags. Parliament House
Parliament House, North Terrace photographed between 1872-1884. Compare with B 7448. In 1875 Old Parliament House was extended to the west, providing an enlarged House of Assembly Chamber, staircase and rooms for officers. The extension was built of Mitcham sandstone rather than the previously used limestone.
Public Library
Public Library, North Terrace was opened in 1884 and housed not only the Public Library but also the Museum and Art Gallery. The library employed three staff and held 23,000 books. The building is French Renaissance in style with a mansard roof. The walls are constructed of brick with Sydney freestone facings with decorations in a darker shade of Manoora stone.
Railway Station
[General description] The railway lines in the foreground of this view make an interesting pattern. In the background the stone railway buildings can be seen, and behind them, some of the buildings on North Terrace. To the right of the signal box in the centre blurred figures of men are busy unloading goods from a railway wagon into a horse-drawn one. Adelaide Railway Station
[General description] This photograph shows the Adelaide Railway Station, built in 1856, after alterations made in 1878 when a second storey was added. It is a stone building with red brick dressings with a large arched portico and wide verandahs. A decorative wrought iron railing runs along the roof ridge. See B 9875 for the original building.
South Australian Institute
South Australian Institute Building on North Terrace was the focal point in Adelaide's cultural life. It is a typical example of a Victorian building in the Renaissance style. Its central entrance hallway featured a grand stairway. The ground floor housed the circulating library, a large reading room, coffee room also used for lectures and a boardroom. Upstairs were three large rooms intended for classes and meetings. At the time of this photograph the lighting in the reading room and air conditioning devices were replaced.
River Torrens parklands
Buildings and parklands between North Terrace East, Frome Road., & River Torrens. Looking south west from a point a little west of the Albert Bridge. The newly opened Public Library building can be seen in the distance together with the New Colonial Store building which was erected in 1867. The photograph shows men rowing on the lake with the steep banks of the lake in the background.
River Torrens
Looking west from a point east of the Adelaide Bridge. A foot paddle boat is moored on the bank in the foreground and the boat sheds can be seen opposite on the southern side of Torrens Lake. Numerous rowing boats have been pulled up onto the banks either side of the lake.
Torrens Railway Bridge
Railway Bridge over the River Torrens on the Port Adelaide line. The bridge was opened in 1878 and the remains of the old bridge can be seen in the creek
Victoria Square
[General description] Civic buildings including the Post Office, Town Hall and Treasury Buildings form a backdrop to the Victoria Square Gardens where two men pose for the photographer. At this time there is a metal fence around the square which predates the later wrought iron railings. [General description] Two muddy paths, lined with formal gardens, converge in this view of part of the West Terrace Cemetery. A sign in the foreground states that 'No dogs (are) admitted'.
The "Harbinger"
The "Harbinger" in the old basin at Port Adelaide. Buller and Conrad served on this ship. This iron ship of 1473 tons was built in 1876 at Greeock. Said to have been the last sailing ship built to carry passengers in the Australian trades, and constructed especially to try and outdo the "Torrens". She did not remain long in the South Australian trade, but became very popular in the Melbourne run
The "California"
The "California" at Table Bay. This four masted steel barque of 3099 tons was built in 1890 in Belfast. She visited South Australia in the 1890s.
