[General description] This delicate glass building, generally known as the Palm House, was designed by Gustav Runge in Bremen, Germany, transported to South Australia in kit form and assembled in 1876. It was thought at the time that palms would only grow under glass in Adelaide's climate. Botanic Gardens in 1872-86 showing a fountain spurting into the lake which is surrounded by willows and reeds. When reticulated water was connected to the Gardens in 1860 the Owens Fountain, created as a feature on the main path, was opened in 1861.

Botanic Gardens new Palm House was constructed in 1875 following Director Dr Richard Schomburgk decision that the existing Palm House was over crowded, and is perhaps the only surviving example of German cast iron/wrought iron conservatory architecture in Australia.

Botanic Gardens Victoria House glass house was built in 1868 to house one of the first cultivated displays of the Amazon Waterlily. This plant first flowered in 1868 producing 152 flowers and 176 leaves up to two metres in diameter. At the time the glass house attracted 30,000 visitors which was almost a fifth of Adelaide's population. The photograph shows numerous hanging baskets of tropical plants enjoying the humid conditions of the glass house
