Rock Tavern, Norton Summit

Rock Tavern and Mr. Turner's, on the Old Norton Summit Road. Rock Tavern first opened in 1857 but trading ceased when the New Norton Summit Road was built in 1889. The first proprietor of the single storey building was Iaaac Gepp. In 1882 after this photograph was taken the tavern was rebuilt with two storeys. The Rock Tavern was a good example of the growth and development of inns at this time.

The Parade, Norwood, showing the north west corner of Osmond Terrace with the Post Office and Norwood Institute on the corner. A horse trough stands under a shady tree outside the Post Office. The Foundation Stone was laid by Governor Sir Anthony Musgrave in 1875. The Institute was completed in 1876 and held 25 books with 27 registered subscribers. A large lecture hall was added in 1882.

[General description] A distant horse and cart is the only traffic on the broad Norwood Parade where houses, gardens and shops line the street. The Adelaide Hills are seen in the background. The Baptist church on the right was designed by James Cumming and opened in January 1870. [General description] Norwood Institute, designed by Mr. W.H. Abbott, the Government Architect who worked gratis for the Institute. The Contractor was A.G. Chapman. Due to costs this front stone portion of the building was built first and was opened in 1876. In 1882 the building was enlarged and extended.

J. Johnston's residence at Oakbank. Brothers James and Andrew Johnston arrived in South Australia from Scotland in 1839. They opened up country in the Onkaparinga Valley and named the township Oakbank after the Scottish town from came from. They founded a brewery in 1845 which manufactured cordial after 1938

St. Thomas' Church, Pewsey Vale built near Eden Valley showing the apse overlooking Jacob's Creek. The church was erected in ca.1861 by Joseph Gilbert for his employees. A stone wall surrounds the churchyard.

[General description] Adults and children standing outside the buildings and along the road leading to the Point McLeay Mission Station. The mission comprises of several small cottages and larger community buildings. Point McLeay Mission Station stands at the northern end of the peninsula between Lakes Alexandrina and Albert in the Lower Murray Region of South Australia. It was renamed Raukkan in 1982. Point McLeay Mission Station

Point McLeay Mission Station was built on the south east shore of Lake Alexandrina in the Coorong in the heartland of the Ngarrindjeri people. The Mission was founded in 1859 by the Aborigines' Friends Association to help the Aboriginal people of the Lower Lakes. Poor quality land and lack of funding hindered its progress. Familes and orphaned children were housed there until the Government took control in 1916. The photograph shows a group of well maintained cottages and a church.

Queen's Wharf, Port Adelaide. The building to the left is the Queen's Stores owned by the Government. In 1872 it was rented by Henry Simpson and Son, coal merchant. This photograph was taken from a point a few yards from the ferry steps. Many ships are moored at the wharf or anchored off shore. A lot of the cargo appears to be wool bales.

The "Torrens", a government dredger at Port Adelaide. The 452 tonne bucket dredge was was imported from Scotland by the South Australian Company, arriving in Port Adelaide on 1 December 1877. For more information see article in the South Australian Register, Adelaide SA, Thu 28 Feb 1878, p.6.

Government dockyard, at Port Adelaide: in the centre can be seen the "Kadina", a 400 tons steam barge/hopper used in connection with dredging operations and was imported by the South Australian Government in 1879.

Prince Alfred Sailor's Home

Prince Alfred Sailor's Home, Port Adelaide is an imposing three storey building designed by architect Robert G Thomas. HRH Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh laid the foundation stone in 1869. It was built on intertidal ground and suffered severe subsidence with the foundation sinking 19 inches into the sediment. When the building was demolished several artifacts were discovered in the foundation stones which included bottles, coins copies of the newspapers of the time.

Post and Telegraph Offices, Port Adelaide. The scaffolding on the Customs House is for the final work performed on the building. The symmetrical Italianate Telegraph Office was completed in 1868 and housed the Port Adelaide telephone exchange which opened in 1883. This photograph shows the bluestone building with chimneys and cement rendered dressings.

Port Adelaide Institute

Port Adelaide Institute forms the southern section of the Customs House complex. The Port Adelaide Institute was formed in 1859 and was a centre for education and other cultural and social activities in Port Adelaide for over 100 years. The building was constructed from bluestone and contained a library, reading room, museum, lecture hall, classrooms and a balustraded parapet with a mansard roof.

Harrold Brothers premises, Todd Street, near the corner of St.Vincent's Street, Port Adelaide. The Harrold Brothers founded the Adelaide Line, later known as the Harrold Line, which carried passengers and cargo between London and Adelaide and around the Australian coast.

Customs House

Customs House

Customs House, Port Adelaide. This view shows the Customs House on Commercial Road, Port Adelaide, the third Customs building on this site. It was built in 1877-79 in the Victorian Italianate style, next to the earlier Institute building (1874-76). Originally the two buildings were separated by a laneway but they were later joined together. The Customs House was designed by Colonial Architect George Thomas Light and originally housed the Marine Board, Surveyors and Harbor Master.

Dunn's Mill, Port Adelaide. This six storey steam flour mill was erected by John Dunn junior and was producing flour by 1866. It was burned down later that same year. Sabotage was suspected and the mill was rebuilt the following year and destoyed by fire again in 1887. Dunn eventually owned eleven steam mills. The mill in this photograph was situated between the Port Adelaide railway yard and Lipson Street.
