Palmerston. Beach. See also b 9742. Camp between Fort Hill and main shore. George Goyder established a new settlement called Palmerston in 1869. His camp was situated at Fort Hill. The camp was built just above the high tide mark and the photograph shows a collection of rustic buildings with an expanse of small rocks in the foreground.

Grave of John W. Ogilvie Bennett, and Richard Hazard, both members of Goyder's Survey Party. Goyder was sent by the government of South Australia to lay out street plans for a capital to be named Palmerston. Bennett was a draftsman and died from a spear attack and Richard Hazard was a cook who died from rheumatism

Intersection of Jacob and Reid Streets, the Todd Street Methodist Church is in the background. The house in foreground still existed in 1941 and unchanged except for the addition of a verandah along the northern frontage. A note written on the back of the photograph in 1969 states that the pine tree in the garden is now the highest tree in Gawler.

Decorated street scene on the occasion of the opening of the Gawler Town Hall, 20 November 1878. The grand opening caused much excitement in the town and the local shops were decorated for the occasion. This photograph shows an archway which had been created over Murray Street. The attached banners read "God Save the Queen" and "Welcome Sir Jervois". A crown made from light bulbs adorns the top of the banner and flags are flying on either side of the arch.
