Signal Station, Semaphore
Signal Station, Semaphore. The Pilot is seated at the end of the wall & Signalman William Uden is leaning on the post. In the enclosure is the old wooden room in which the pilots on night duty slept. The two storey house was owned by Richard Jagoe, the shipping reporter. The Time Ball tower on the extreme left was completed by December 1874. The time service commenced on 2nd August, 1875. See research note 545. This view was reproduced in the 'Observer', 27th December, 1924, also on the 21st May, 1904 (wrongly dated 1860s).

Semaphore jetty & baths. The baths run perpendicular to the end of the long jetty. A small raised band stand is situated on the foreshore adjacent to the beach.

Stores at Semaphore
[General description] The premises of William Hastie, Baker, Grocer and Confectioner is a two storey stone building with an iron lace decorated verandah and elegant shop windows. The living quarters are upstairs. Hastie's horse and cart (probably driven by Mr. Hastie) stands in front of the building. Various family members and staff and a riding horse are included in the photograph. On the left is W. Jenkins butcher shop which has uncovered carcasses hanging from the verandah. [On back of photograph] 'Semaphore Road, north side / Between Woolnough Road and Penny Street / About 1885 / Presented by Mrs. J.G. Grundy'.


Water tower, Semaphore
Water tower, Semaphore. It was built to improve the pressure of the local water supply but it was also useful for mariners as a land mark. This water tower was built in 1880 and stands on Blackler Street. It was built to maintain the local water supply when the Jervois Bridge opened and disrupted the main water supply. The octagonal walls are very thick.


Signal Station, Semaphore
The Signal Station at Semaphore: a view taken in March 1936 just before it was demolished because of damage by white ants. The Signal Station was superseded by the one at Outer Harbour in 1937. The Time Ball Tower seen in the background ceased in 1932, superseded by wireless telegraphy.

[General description] A few people stroll along Semaphore jetty where the wharf can be seen in the distance. On the right is a signal station: see B 7310 for a better view.

[General description] Looking along Semaphore jetty towards its end where a ship can be seen. The man in the small building with a window counter is possibly a refreshment seller.


Semaphore jetty
Semaphore jetty was completed in 1860 to provide berths for the pilot and quanantine launches. The customs officers went out to the ships in the pilot launch. In 1873 the original jetty was lengthened to 2138 feet. The water was15 feet deep at the end. This photograph shows the lifeboat shed, crew's quarters and a shelter shed on the branch spur. The other branch spur which was built in 1888 can also be seen. This housed the baths which were divided into two sections for both male and female bathing. People harvesting dried seaweed can be seen on the sands and also a sign stating "Ladies Bathing Ground"
