Jetty at Semaphore

Jetty at Semaphore

[General description] The foreshore at Semaphore is crowded with people, strolling along the jetty, picknicking on the beach and milling around ice cream stalls and sideshows. The presence of the Semaphore Baths at the northern end of the jetty indicates that this photograph is pre-1917 as the baths were demolished in a storm in that year. [On back of photograph] 'Semaphore Jetty / before 1927'. A researcher notes that the Wonga Shoal Lighthouse (1901-1912) is visible on the horizon (above the Semaphore Baths). Hence this view can be no later than 17 November 1912, when the lighthouse was knocked over by the three-masted barque 'Dimsdale'.
