Carrington Smedley

Carrington Smedley was born in Nottinghamshire and served an apprenticeship in the drapery business. He arrived in South Australia in 1848 with his wife and two daughters on board "Thomas Lowry". He set up business in Kapunda and owned land there. He was elected to the South Australian House of Assembly in 1857. Harriet and Carrington had six children. Later he was remarried to Mary Peacock and they lived at the Peacock mansion "Palm House" at Hackney and at "Torrens Villa" at Semaphore

[General description] The Liberal Club Building, taken from the opposite side of the road, with North Terrace gardens and parked cars in the foreground. Designed by architect Frank Counsell in the Beaux Arts style this seven storey building features a tier of spacious verandahs. It is one of Adelaide's early reinforced concrete buildings. Car no. 33482 was a Hupmobile, owned by Mrs. E. J. Haines, of Semaphore. [General description] The bronze statue of Sir Ross Smith stands on a red granite plinth which features bronze bas-relief work depicting aeroplanes and various symbols. Bronze figures stand at either side of the plinth, one being a Roman soldier. The inscription reads: 'Sir Ross Smith / Born at Semaphore Australia / December 4th 1892 / Died at Weybridge England / April 13th 1922 / Erected by the people of South Australia to commemorate the first successful flight from England to Australia November 12- December 10 / 1919 / Illi robur et aes triplex'. Sculptor was Mr. Frederick Brook Hitch who won a competition to design this statue. [On back of photograph] 'Sir Ross Smith Memorial Statue / Cresswell Gardens / 1928'.

The "Lochee" arrived dismasted at Port Adelaide and was refitted there. She made visits to South Australia in the 1870s and 1890s. She was an iron ship of 1812 tons, built and registered in Dundee. She carried immigrants who endured appalling conditions. Many died on the voyage. She made voyages to Port Adelaide and The Semaphore in 1877, 1897, 1899, 1913

The "Mermerus" visited South Australia in 1899. The iron ship weighing 1671 tons was registered in Glasgow but sold to Russian owners. She was one of the best known clippers in the Australian wool trade. She arrived at Port Adelaide and The Semaphore on four voyages from 1898 to 1908

Robert Hall Lawrie

No. 1296A Private Robert Hall Lawrie was born in Edinburgh Scotland in 1884. The nephew of Robert Hall of Kelmscott, Alberton, South Australia, Robert was a engine driver at the time of his attestation in September 1914. He served at Gallipoli, Egypt and France, returning to Australia in November 1918. After WWI Robert worked with H.M. Customs, he never married and died at Semaphore on 16 May 1959. He was buried in Cheltenham Cemetery.

Only described as 'Soldier McKenzie' this photo is believed to be of Private Daniel Humphrey McKenzie, service number 2948, 10th Battalion. Born 19 March 1888 at Dulwich, South Australia. Son of Daniel Mckenzie and Margaret nee Barber of Germein Street, Semaphore, SA. Painter and Decorator by trade. Enlisted 8 June 1915. Awarded Distinguished Conduct Medal 'for conspicuous bravery in the taking of Melville's Post. When all the NCO's had become casualties he took charge of the bayonet team, and although he was knocked over three times by shell fire he continued to lead the bayonet me.' Killed in action 25 February 1917 in France Aged 28 years. Commemorated Villers Bretonneux, France.
