Hotel, Overland Corner

Overland Corner Hotel, built in 1859. Overland Corner Hotel was purchased by the National Trust of South Australia in 1965, and steeped in history and having survived floods and ruin. Overland Corner Hotel Built 1859, this is by far the oldest surviving building in the Riverland. It's original construction was almost entirely of locally available materials, including limestone, red gum and native pine timbers, a dirt floor and thatched roof of river reeds. This rough bush inn, situated on a vital stock route from N.S.W., catered to drovers, explorers and other travelers and became the heart of the first outlying European settlement in the region.

A crowd assembled outside the fire-damaged Town Hall at Wallaroo. A sign for the Savings Bank of South Australia is adjacent to the front entrance of the building, and bicycles are parked against a steel fence at a level train crossing in the foreground. A note on the reverse, signed by 'E' reads 'This is the Ruins of the Town Hall Where the X is, is yours truly & next to me is two of my girl friends Misses Una Hooper & Nell Dorey'.

Residence, Marble Hill

[General description] Marble Hill, summer retreat for South Australia's governors. It was designed by Colonial Architect William McMInn in the 'Scottish baronial revival' style and built (c. 1879) from local sandstone with a roof of welsh slate. It was burnt down in bushfires of 1955 and remained a ruin for many years. In 2017 reconstruction is under way.

OONTOO: The ruins of the old customs-house at Oontoo on the Queensland border; a man with a car in the foreground. The car is a Ford Model 'T', possibly about 1911. The body-work looks to be Australian made. The car is left-hand drive, therefore probably a direct import from the USA. [from information provided by a researcher]. Another researcher has provided the following information: The old customs house of Oontoo was taken from the name of the Yandruwandha tribe waterhole, called 'Nguntu', which is right on the border of Queensland and South Australia. It is situated just west along Cooper Creek from the Burke and Wills 'Dig Tree', and a little further east again is Nappamerrie station beside 'Ngapa Miri' waterhole, taken up by John Conrick in the early 1860s.

Gibson's Camp Hotel - erected in 1884. Note on the back of the photograph says "The only hotel between Port Augusta and Tarcoola. Demolished on completion of East West Line in 1915". The hotel was the first nights camping place for "Mail Passengers". This was the scene of many exciting episodes in days of yore. The ruins can be seen from the windows of the East West Train".

[General description] A man wearing a solar topee poses next to the old Parsonage, which was built by early German settlers and stood on the right (western) bank of the River Torrens. The building is in a state of ruin and was subsequently demolished. [On back of photograph] 'Parsonage at Klemzig built by early German settlers (Reproduced in the Chronicle for November 19th, 1936) / According to a letter from the photographer dated November 21st, 1936 the parsonage stood on the western bank of the Torrens, not far from the Klemzig Cemetery / It was demolished "quite a number of years ago" / The photograph was taken in 1911 or perhaps a little earlier'.

The central part of the building has started to collapse, probably because of damage done when machinery was removed.
