John Dunn's wind-driven flour mill at Hay Valley in ruins. John Dunn arrived in South Australia in 1840 and built a windmill in 1842 for grinding flour on land purchased near his brother's property at Hay Valley (near Nairne) The windmill was possibly the first in Australia. In 1844 he built his first steam mill in Mount Barker when South Australia was the only colony in Australia producing wheat.

Comprising 34 X 35mm colour photo transparencies (slides) taken by Dr. Trevor J. Mount while employed as a geologist by Delhi Petroleum/Santos Ltd (Adelaide) in the exploration for oil and gas in the Cooper and Eromanga Basins. This major petroleum province is located in the Simpson Desert of far north eastern South Australia, and extends into Queensland. The images record a stage in the history of the area beginning with the early explorers (Bourke & Wills) who opened up the land ahead of the pastoralists (Kidman) and petroleum pioneers (Reg Sprigg, Bonython). At the start of the new millenium, the area was being developed for geothermal energy. See CONTENTS for more information and details.

Ruins, Inverbrackie

Ruins of the Caledonian Church, Inverbrackie. The church was opened in 1848, and closed in 1878, because it "had proved too small and uncentral". The congregation was moved to the new Scotch Church, Woodside, which was bought from the Lutherans, and named St. Johns Presbyterian Church. A similar photograph of the ruins can be viewed at SRG 123/348/43. A note on the back of the photograph states: "Ruins of the Caledonian Church situated in Inverbrackie Valley (about a mile south of Woodside). Photographed in 1900. Church erected in 1848. Fire caused in March 1912 by an employee of one of the Adelaide monumental yards who had been sent up to cut an additional inscription on a headstone at the back of the church and whose pipe, while he was asleep, set alight to the surrounding grass. [Letter from Mr A Thomson of Woodside, June 23, 1932]". The photograph shows the ruins completely covered by creepers.
