Smith, Channon & Co. building, Port Adelaide

Smith, Channon & Co. building, Port Adelaide

The offices of Smith, Channon & Co. at Lipson Street, Port Adelaide, Customs, Shipping & Commission Agents, Bonded & Free Stores, which stood until 1963 opposite the Dock Railway Station. These premises were originally owned by Philip Santa Co., Merchants and shipping agents (James Smith, Manager), and acquired by Smith Channon & Co. about 1887. It was sold to J. Gadsden, bag merchant, and the company moved to one of Blacker's buildings in St. Vincent Street, formerly occupied by J. Rawlings & Son, and then by M. Donaghy & Son. In front of the building are Herbert Marshall, J.W. Channon, Frank Pickhaver, and John Turnbull. Vernon Smith was abroad at the time, and troops were passing through Port Adelaide to the Boer War. J.G. Brooks is on the firm's trolley, holding the horse 'Bully'. To see a selection of photographs in this collection, search on Archival number PRG 1642/26.

Outside view of the Port Admiral Hotel, located at 55 Commercial Road, on the corner of St. Vincent Street and Commercial Road, Port Adelaide. Renovation work is taking place on the building, the verandah has been removed and cyclone fencing has been put up. Signs on the fencing provide historical background to the hotel. The middle banner advertises a weekend Vintage Festival on Lipson Street. This part of the building faces the intersection of the two roads, with Commercial Road to the left of the photo. The building to the right of the hotel was once occupied by William Russell Pty. Ltd., sailmaker and ship chandler, but appears to now be used for office spaces.

An Australian Railroad Group train crossing the bridge over Commercial Street, Port Adelaide, viewed from Lipson St. The train is carting stone for Penrice Soda ash plant, Osborne. The bridge is now used only for passenger trains and has been upgraded from steel support to concrete.
