Dunn's Mill, Port Adelaide
Dunn's Mill, Port Adelaide. This six storey steam flour mill was erected by John Dunn junior and was producing flour by 1866. It was burned down later that same year. Sabotage was suspected and the mill was rebuilt the following year and destoyed by fire again in 1887. Dunn eventually owned eleven steam mills. The mill in this photograph was situated between the Port Adelaide railway yard and Lipson Street.

James R. McColl's store, 99 Lipson Street, Port Adelaide. The business, which specialised in coppersmithing, house and ship plumbing, tinsmithing and gasfitting, was founded in 1861, while the shop building was erected in 1885.

Foreshore at Port Elliot
The foreshore at Port Elliot. The area of Horseshoe Bay was proclaimed a port on August, 28, 1851 following Thomas Lipson's survey of the proposed anchorage. Granite outcrops, sandy beach rolling ocean and relics of the once busy port are apparent. This photograph shows day trippers enjoying the beach. Beach tents and cars line the foreshore. Children are paddling in the sea

Mr. Gilbert Young, last of Port Adelaide blacksmiths in Lipson Street, the shop is to be transferred to a museum complex at Alice Springs.


Bank of South Australia
The Bank of South Australia, Port Adelaide, on the north-east corner of Commercial Road and Divett Street. (See also B 2782.) It was built in 1859, by architect Edmund Wright and builder Charles Farr (vide Observer 12 March 1859, p3b). According to a researcher, this image depicts the Bank of South Australia on Commercial Rd, Port Adelaide not Lipson Street.


Willunga Rifle Regiment
Members of Willunga Rifle Regiment. Originally under the command of Capt. T.Atkinson it was later disbanded but re-formed during the Russian scare under the command of Capt. Noye, again disbanded until the Boer War when a cavalry troop was formed under Capt.Lipson.


George Hall
George Hall M.L.C acted as Harbour Master to Thomas Lipson from 1840-1841. He started a business salt-curing beef. Worked on a cattle property near Angaston, then set up a shipping business in Port Adelaide. He was a committee member of SA Railway Company, Chamber of Commerce, Burra Burra Mine. He was a founder of SA Gas Company. He was elected to the Legislative Council and owned the property of Woodside House. The photograph is copied from glass portrait donated by Miss Alice E Hall of Frome House, North Terrace.

Mr. Gilbert Wood
Mr. Gilbert Wood and his wife Mrs Ann Wood (nee Fraser) had four daughters and three sons and they lived at Seaton Cottage on Magill Road. Gilbert Williamson Wood (1828 - 1886) was born in the Shetland Islands and came to Australia as chief mate on the brig "Seaton". In 1876 he founded the company G Wood and Company with premises in Rundle Street, Adelaide and Lipson Street, Port Adelaide. He was a deacon of Clayton Congregational Church for seventeen years
