[General description] Bank of Adelaide, Kapunda. Built of sandstone and bluestone in 1866, architects were Edmund Wright and Wood. It was the Bank of Adelaide's oldest branch office.

Kapunda township. A prominent building in the photograph houses AF Mayger Baker and Caterer. Wagons and carriages can be seen in the street. "The main street from the railway station to the north of the Victoria township is one continuous double line of substantial and commodious places of business" Kapunda Herald, 6 January 1865. The National Bank built in 1862 is an imposing two storey Georgian building

Kapunda township looking down the main street to Christ Church Anglican Church in the distance. The church was established in 1888. The hotel is on the left corner and a wagon loaded with wool bales is on the right of the photograph. The hotel is possibly the Sir John Franklin situated on Main Street which was the leading hotel in the early days. A researcher has provided the following information: 'The hotel was then known as Crase's Hotel and is now known as the North Kapunda Hotel. The street where the church can be seen at the end is known as Crase Street'.

[General description] A gang of men are at work using a crane to lift girders on a railway bridge over the River Light, near Kapunda. It was part of the Railways Department's push to strengthen bridges on the Adelaide to Morgan line so as to be able to use larger engines for goods traffic. (From an article describing the process in the 'Kapunda Herald' dated Friday 2 August, 1912 p. 2) See B 12628 for another view.

Residence of Sir Sidney Kidman - staff standing on steps. Residence of Sir Sidney Kidman at Kapunda called Eringa. He died at his property at Unley Park also called Eringa. He was a landowner, owning many stations. When Kidman moved his office to Adelaide he donated his Kapunda house to the Education Department to be used as a high school. The building had been constructed for Alexander Greenshields in 1879. The photograph shows maintenance work being carried out on the house

Elder Smith's sale yards at Kapunda - galvanised building on the right is the Flour Mill. The sales ran anually for over thirty years attracting buyers from overseas to Kapunda. The mill seen in the background was established in 1870

This first appears in the South Australian Directory for 1918 so the date for this photograph is possibly incorrect (1907-1911?) Also in the background is the business of G Hall and Sons - mineral waters and cordials

Kapunda School existed from 1907. In 1922 The school transferred to a new stone building which was officially opened by Sidney Kidman on October 12, 1922. Sir Sidney gifted his home, Eringa, to the Education Department to be used as the administration building for Kapunda High School

A Blackstone Oil Engine, with some workers and two young women standing beside it, at Kapunda. [Information provided by Tim Macaire]. As mines got deeper a steam engine was used in 1847 to drive a water pump. This was was replaced by a larger one in 1851. In 1865 the mine was leased to a Scottish company which switched to open cut mining methods. Mining operations ceased in 1851 and restarted in 1855 after the Victorian goldrush. Kapunda was the saviour of South Australia's financial woes in the 1840s.

This is a copy of a lithograph with the caption 'The Kapunda Mines, fro the Catholic Chapel Hill. - From a photograph by E.S. Nixon. - see page 85'. It seems likely that this is a transposition error and the photo should have been attributed to S.E. Nixon who was working as a photographer at that time.

De Passey (4th from left); Colonel Hancock (5th from left); Lieutenant L.A. Lewis (third from right) and Captain Rev. G.W. Kendrew (on right).
