Hindley Street, north side, November 1939,looking east from a point a little west of Victoria Street. The near side of the Victoria Hotel is 15 yards west of Victoria Street. The sign "Brown's" on the far side of the photograph (to the right of the clock) is on the eastern alignment of Blyth Street. Shops and business to be seen include Sharples Printers established in 1898, Victoria Hotel (proprietors at this time were Frank Webber and Arthur Lee), The Metro Cinema (film showing was "The Citadel"), Wiggs and Son, Alf Beck, Brown's and Miller Anderson.

Hindley Street, North side, 18 July 1940, the far side of the centre building is 30 yards east of George Street. The buildings standing back from street alignment were demolished in 1940. The near side of the buildings abut George Street. The buildings in the photograph are all two storeys tall.

Hindley Street, north side, east corner of Gray Street, 18 March 1929. The Old Foundry Hotel. Near side of one storey shop is 28 1/2 yards east of Gray Street. Shop front installed at corner in 1938. [General description] A man and some children pose for the photographer outside this dilapidated building, probably once the premises of the Albion Hotel, which appears to be in the first stages of demolition. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 70 / Morphett Street, west side / 1910-19. / The far side of the City Produce Co.'s building is 57 yards south of Hindley Street. Near side of building * on the corner is 38.5 yards south of Hindley Street. *The Albion Hotel (see list of licences 1839-40) is said to have occupied this site.' (Another hand) 'Correct. See Duryea Panorama' (Another hand) 'Copied from a photo. in the possession of the S.A. Branch of the Royal Geographical Society'. A hard copy version of the photo has the inscription 'The building in the corner was one of the first hotels built in Adelaide and called the Albion Hotel. Kept by Jack Heed and old sport. The building with City Produce Co was built some years later and was used as a dancing hall. J. Lewis.'

Marina Bar, Hindley Street, south side corner, Morphett Street, east side, 28 August 1964. Morphett Street frontage (marked ) is 32 yards. Marina Pizza Bar was Adelaide's first pizza shop, opening two years before Marcellina's in 1964. Pizzas were 35 cents. It was established by Italian migrants Mario Bellati and his wife Amelia. Their chef went across to Marcellina's in 1966

King William Street, Adelaide, west side, south of Hindley Street, January 12th 1920. Archer and Holland, Jewellers, have recently been established on the ground floor. Cecil H. Smith, Tailors, are on the first floor, and a dentist, Dr. Eastway, occupies the top floor of the Industrial Buildings which stand on the north corner of Gilbert Place. For a photo of Industrial Buildings, altered and enlarged just after January 1920, see B 2037 (taken February 1924). The three storey buildings extending for 50 yards south of Hindley Street were demolished in 1934. Compare with B 6563 and B 6567.

Hindley Street, Adelaide, at the King William Street intersection, facing west. On the right hand corner is Platt's Stationers and Booksellers, and, next door to it is W. Bermingham, Bootmaker's premises, both located in the Neale Building. The Exchange Hotel, dating from 23rd March, 1839, is the next building along the street. The licensee at this time is J. Crampton.

Hindley Street, north side, showing the Theatre Royal. The billboard in front of the theatre advertises George Musgrove's production of Offenbach's 'La Fille du Tambour Major', starring Nellie Stewart. This production toured Australia in the early 1800s. On the right is the ornate lamp belonging to the White Hart Hotel opposite. The near side of Miller Anderson's (second store from the right) is 41 yards west of Gresham Street. The extreme left of the photograph is 2 yards east of Peel Street. See B 2909 for another view of the Theatre.

In the front of the building, at the kerbside, is a 'blackboy' horse hitching post which would probably have been imported from the United States. A selection of cane chairs can be seen in the windows. They also sell dining room suites, drawing room suites and bedroom suites.

Hindley Street, north side, 22 October 1938. The left side of WH Bruce's Butcher and Poulterers (formerly Conrad's) abuts Victoria Street. Frontage is 8.5 yards. The total frontage between Victoria Street and far side of the three storey building on the right is 24 yards. Buildings adjoining include a laundry and wine cafe. [General description] Lithograph of an S.T. Gill sketch, from'Views in Adelaide No. 2'. Shows Hindley Street looking east, with city buildings on either side of the unsealed road. The two storey Phoenix hotel on the right (on the east corner of Clarendon Street) was established in 1850 and the licensee from 1850-52 was R. Hall. The Royal Oak and Miner's Arms Hotel can be seen on the left of the picture, with a partial view of the Clarendon Hotel further east. Adelaide Hotel, Hindley Street, south side. Right side of the hotel is 15 yards east of Morphett Street; frontage: 20 yards. Right side of the hotel is 15 yards east of Morphett Street. Frontage is 20 yards. Mrs Eliza Woodhead was the proprietor of the Adelaide Hotel from 1907-1913. The lady, man and youth standing outside the hotel is possibly Eliza and her family.

Hindley Street, south side, Grand Coffee Palace, right side of building is 2.5 yards west of Victoria Street and frontage is 29.5 yards. This three storey building with wrought iron lace work fencing on the first floor balcony houses the Grand Coffee Palace. It has brass plaques either side of the doorway. Eight sets of verandah posts support the balcony of this large building.
