[General description] This view shows city buildings on Hindley Street, with two buses parked in front of Miller Anderson's. This store began in 1839 as Miller and Gale, a small shop in Hindley Street. [On back of photograph] 'Acres 48 and 47 / Hindley Street, north side / May 16, 1926 / Miller Andersons five story building was completed in 1925. Far side of the new building is 12 yards west of Gresham Street. Frontage: 29 yards.'

North corner Hindley and King William Streets. The far side of Moss's Loan Bank is 27-1/2 yards north of Hindley Street. A dramatic rescue is taking place in the building on the corner of Hindley Street and King William Street. Fire has broken out and a fireman can be seen with a person draped over his shoulder. they are about to descend from the third storey via a series of ladders. Firemen can be seen on the roof of the premises. The building appears to be a tobacconist shop and Alfred Augustus Stump's photographic studio. A large crowd has gathered to watch the drama unfold. The fire broke out in December 1900 and gutted the studio.

West End Brewery and Hindley St Auto Bar, Hindley Street, south side, 27th September 1963. Frontage of the Auto Bar is 14 yards. The brewery opened in Hindley Street in 1859. It was established by William H Clark and later taken over by South Australian Brewing, Malting, Wine and Spirit Company. The works were demolished in 1983

Intersection of King William Street and Rundle Street looking west into Hindley Street. On the north west corner of Hindley Street stands Isaac's Corner housing the tobacconist. On the south west corner stands The Clothing Palace selling overcoats, shirts and ties. A horse drawn tram is moving into King William Street and a man riding a penny farthing bicyle is riding into Hindlay Street. Many shoppers are out and about on this cold muddy day. On the north east side of the Rundle Street intersection stands a bootmaker shop and opposite this is a tailor and fabric mercer.

[General description] The Bee Hive corner building dominates in this busy city street scene, taken just after five o'clock in the afternoon. In the foreground a man holds the horses as people wait to board a horse tram, soon to be superceded by the the new electric trams which are seen passing along King William Street. [General description] The building in the centre is the new 10 storey Savings Bank of South Australia, built circa 1954. This Modernist building was to the design of architects Caradoc Ashton, Fisher, Woodhead and Beaumont-Smith. There are no windows on the narrow Hindley Street frontage or the western facade. The eastern Bank Street facade consists of a new type of double glazed windows, manufactured in Australia under licence from the USA. providing maximum light penetration and insulation against cold and heat. Morphett Street, east side, 17 February 1930, far side of cottage is 60.5 yards north of Hindley Street and frontage is 9.5 yards. This cottage standing on the corner of Hindley Street and Morphett Street is partly demolished and was later converted into water closets.

Hindley Street, north side, 1 March 1954, frontage of the Castle Inn is 23 yards and Morphett Street frontage is 12 yards. The Castle Inn is situated on the north west corner of Hindley Street and Morphett Street. The Castle Inn was remodelled from an existing building. The alterations were completed in 1953. For a view of building prior to alterations see B 7385. The building to the north of Castle Inn holds the business of D & J Fowler, grocers and later to become Fowlers' Lion Factory. The eastern portion of this building was demolished in 1966 during the widening of Morphett Street and the building of new twin bridges across North Terrace and the River Torrens

Mrs Eliza Woodhead was the proprietor of the Adelaide Hotel from 1907-1913. This photograph in comparison to B 8980 shows the addition of a balcony addition to the first floor. The family standing on the balcony is possibly Mrs Woodhead and her daughters.

Frontages are 15 yards on Hindley Street and 21 yards on Morphett Street to the end of the two storey portion. Garage not completely shown in this view but see B 4040. For a view of this building taken in 1926 see B 4040. Cratsis Building alterations were completed in 1952. See also B 7508. The Star Grocery was built on land owned by William Everard Lucy, a farmer from Modbury. It was acquired by Stavros Cratsis, a storekeeper in 1947

West End Brewery on the south side of Hindley Street 8 December 1925. Horse drawn drays stand outside the brewery. The Stock House and Bottling Department are in the forefront. [On back of photograph] Acres 65, 66, 67. Hindley Street, south side. West End Brewery, Dec. 8th, 1925. Brewery extends east to a point about five eighths of an inch from the left edge of photo. The Brewery premises actually include the high wall which appears to the left of the above point. This point is 30 yards east of Liverpool Street. Near side of arch in centre is 41 yards east of Gray Street. For alterations made to buildings on the right in 1938, see B 8197 and B 8209.

[General description] West's Picture Theatre photographed from the opposite side of Hindley Street with the roadway in the foreground. The theatre has an impressive tower topped with a cupola. The shop with the awning (on the right) is D. Ellis, Confectioner. Site of West's Picture Theatre: Far side of tower is 2.5 yards west of the east side of Victoria Street. / Far side of Olympia Cafe is 9 1/2 yards west of the west side of Victoria Street.' According to a researcher, the spire/tower is the entrance to West's Olympia Theatre. It was demolished in 1938 to make way for the West's Theatre, which is now the ASO Grainger Studio.
