Hindley Street, Adelaide, showing a busy street scene. Horse riders, carriages, drays, pedestrians and dogs all amble along the street at a leisurely pace. On the right is Neale's Auction Mart, which has recently been completed. It was erected in 1844. [see South Australian Register, September 7, 1844.] The building on the left, with the verandah, is the Office for the weekly newspaper, the Adelaide Observer. Next to it can be seen the white sign of the Register's Office. This daily newspaper had been issued from that site from June 30th, 1845.

Hindley Street, Adelaide, north side, in October, 1890. A group of men lean on a lamp-post in front of the Theatre Royal. Another group in top hats are about to enter through the 'Dress Circle' door, whilst a horse and buggy stand in the foreground. A billboard in front of the theatre advertises 'The Candidate', a comedy by Harry Saint Maur (in which he also starred) starting on November 4th; probably in 1886 as this production played at the Melbourne Theatre Royal in October in that year. Built in 1878, replacing a theatre built in 1868, it was eventually demolished in 1962 by Miller Anderson and Co., an Adelaide department store which erected a car park on the site. Extreme right of the photograph is 50 yards west of Gresham Street. Extreme left is 2 yards east of Peel Street.

[General description] A group of people, probably staff and customers, pose in front of the Eagle Tavern, a single story building with its name painted on its parapet. The lamp post on the corner bears a sign marked 'Walk round corners' for the benefit of horse riders and drivers. This hotel was built in 1846 with a rebuilding (by South Australian Brewing Company) around 1903. W.A. Hindley Street, Adelaide, looking west. The street is busy with horse-drawn traffic. The Hindmarsh tram line, which was opened in October 1880 can be seen. The building on the extreme left is on the corner of Gilbert Place. The right side of Harrold's premises is 13 yards east of Peel Street. Next door, to the west of Harrold's, is the "White Hart" Hotel,which remained unchanged for many years.

Hindley Street North Side. Right side of the Black Bull Hotel is 29 yards west of Bank Street. Hotel frontage 17 yards. The photograph taken 15th November, 1937 shows a two storey building with ornate wrought iron work enclosing the balcony on the upper level. The sign says "O'Loughlin's Black Bull Hotel 1878".

The ground floor is the premises for W.S.Wood, Tailor and Clothier. A man, possibly the proprietor, is standing in its doorway. The east side of the building is 13 yards west of the Black Bull Hotel, and west side of Wood's is 8 yards east of Blyth Street.
