Rundle Street

Wendts Jewellers in Rundle Street. Joachim Matthias Wendt (1830-1917) was apprenticed to a watchmaker and learnt the silversmith craft. He emigrated to South Australia from Germany and set up as a watchmaker and jeweller. After the Duke of Edinburgh's visit in 1867 J Wendt became "Jeweller to His Royal Highness" in the colony of South Australia. His commercial endeavours flourished and at one time he owned Adelaide Arcade and the Theatre Royal in Hindley Street.

The buildings seen house the Lending Library, at number 27 F Fischer, then Clarkson and Company, then Adelaide Photographic Company. One of the carriages outside had the name Burnside painted on the side.

Blyth Street, east side, 2 October 1899 between Hindley Street and North Terrace. This building houses the business of Norman and Company importers of high grade fertilisers, harvest machines and grain and manure drills. A variety of ploughs are displayed on the footpath. Three men in straw hats are talking in the doorway of the premises.

[General description] Hemmed in on two sides by the West End complex the small building with mullioned windows is in a state of disrepair, with some of the window panes missing. It has an arched door in its corner, perhaps was previously a shop. A sign in its window mentions the name A. Dunn.
