[General description] A lively street scene at the intersection of King William and Hindley Streets, looking north towards Government House where the flagstaff can be seen. Various characters of all walks of life go about their business. Men are unloading sacks from a dray whilst a smart carriage drives by. A woman with a goat cart can be seen on the right. Rundle Street, Adelaide, east corner of Stephens Place, featuring Charles Birks' store. In 1864 Charles Birks started a drapery store in Hindley Street in partnership with David Robin. Later, they moved to this Rundle Street premises and traded as Robin & Birks. (see B 2493) This partnership was dissolved in 1876 and Charles continued alone. Staff are posing for the photographer in front of the store, which has extended into the premises next door. Perhaps the man in the top hat is the proprietor? See his portrait at B 7108. See B 1588 for changes made to Charles Birks and surrounding stores.

On the right a trio of Police Greys ride past a De Dion Bouton, car no. 141, owned by George Bond, later the proprietor of Bond Tours. Neales Buildings, corner of King William Street and Hindley Street. According to an article from the South Australian Weekly Chronicle (24 September 1864), "Messrs. J. M. Amsberg and Gessner have opened a very fine tobacconists' shop near Platt's, King William Street. There is a large and varied stock on hand, and the premises are fitted up in a very superior style."

The street is busy with trams and cars, with cars being angle parked at the kerb. Only a few horse-drawn vehicles are to be seen. Pedestrians stroll across the road in a leisurely manner. Note the traffic policeman on point duty near the white car in the foreground. Archer and Holland Jewellers are on the right, and on the left, in the Waterhouse Building is Lawrence and Levy, Tobacconists. The Town Hall is yet to get its clock.
