[General description] The photographer has used the telegraph wires for an interesting effect in this scene of city street and buildings. The traffic is all horse drawn and prominent is the Kensington horse tram number 76 displaying a sign advertising Shierlaw's clothing and tailoring business. The Industrial Buildings is in the centre. Bertram & Cornish and H. Jones Photographers are on the corner of Hindley Street. On the far right the E.S.& A. Bank building can be seen. Businesses easily made out are Balfours tearooms on the left and Lewis's Southern Cross Hotel in the centre. Note the helmeted policeman on the right. The George Formby film showing at the Mayfair was released in 1938 helping to date the photograph.

People standing in front of the shops have moved and their transparent forms can be seen. On the left is a wagonette drawn by two horses. Ernest Benda's tobacco shop at number 41 King William Street, Adelaide. It was situated on the west side, between Hindley Street and Gilbert Place. The man standing at the doorway may be Mr. Benda. Between 1870 and 1873 this building was used as the office of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, Manchester Union.

Grenfell Street, Adelaide, south side, featuring the office of the South Australian Register. See B 5952 for a view of the recently demolished building on the left. For its replacement, see B 105. The Register was South Australia's first newspaper. Its first issue was printed in London in June 1836, and a year later the second issue was printed in a rush hut in Hindley Street in what is now called Register Place. Eventually it was bought out by the Advertiser and closed down in February 1931.

Hoopers appears to be an ironmongery selling tools and pots and pans. Next down to the east is a tobacconist, then a tailor and outfitters.

[General description] This is the new 10 storey Savings Bank of South Australia, built circa 1954. Pine (Christmas?) trees have been placed on top of the cantilevered verandah. The Modernist building was to the design of architects Caradoc Ashton, Fisher, Woodhead and Beaumont-Smith. There are no windows on the narrow Hindley Street frontage or the western facade. This eastern Bank Street facade consists of a new type of double glazed windows, manufactured in Australia under licence from the USA. providing maximum light penetration and insulation against cold and heat.
