Soldiers wearing tropical uniforms standing beside a sandbagged bunker in a street where buildings have been badly damaged by shelling; exact location not known. A researcher has suggested that the location is South Africa, during the Boer War (1899-1902). The soldiers are holding Lee Enfield rifles, which were introduced in 1895.

A half-plate hand-coloured ambrotype of Corporal William Hill in the uniform of the 1st Adelaide Rifles with corporal's chevrons, holding an Enfield rifle. A printed scorecard (until recently affixed to the rear of the frame) for a match between the Adelaide and Strathalbyn shooting clubs, held on Easter Monday, 28 March 1864, has the name of the winner of the competition highlighted in red ink, one Sergeant Hill.

Shops that can be identified are; Stump & Co., photographers, John Steel, watchmaker & jeweller, T.J. Hannam, fruiterer, Eskell & Tattersall, dentists, W.H. Bishop's tea, coffee & refreshment rooms, and Moss's loan bank. according to a researcher the tram belongs to Adelaide and Suburban Tramway Company, and is destined for North Adelaide and Nailsworth. The terminus was at Rakes Road - now Regency Road, Enfield.
