Mile Post

Old Mile post in John Street, North Adelaide, west side, a little south of Kermode Street. 'A1', barely visible on the top of the post, means one mile from Adelaide. 'E4' means four miles from Enfield. The post stands against an advertising hoarding, featuring advertisements for 'The Famous Scot, McEwen', 'the World's Greatest Mesmerist', and a theatre production entitled 'Town Topics". This view was taken on February 5th, 1924.

Richard & Hurtle Ragless

Richard and Hurtle Ragless on a prospecting expedition. Richard Ragless was one of the early settlers after having arrived on board the 'Eden' in 1838 aged 19. He joined his father and brother in a farming enterprise at Enfield. He was one of the first to use a reaping stripper. He started Montacute Flour Mills near Gepps Cross and ran sheep at Yalpara and Willochra. He won the Angas Prize in 1888 for the best conducted farm from 250 to 1000 acres. He died in 1901 at his residence called Tonsley Park at Edwardstown. The photograph shows Richard and Hurtle Ragless sitting on one camel with three other fully laden camels at the start of their prospecting expedition.

Member of the 16th Australian Light Horse Regiment. A researcher has commented that this is a 'Member of the Australian Army Service Corps 1908-1912 holding a Short Muzzle Lee Enfield rifle.'

[General description] City buildings, traffic and utility wires with the General Post Office tower in the distance. Trams, cars and buses can be seen on the road. The nearest tram is the Number 220 to Enfield. Cars are parked at a 45 degree angle along the kerb. This photo was taken shortly after the completion of the car depot and the alteration of the Tramways Trust offices. Compare with B 1105. The left side of the Tramways Trust offices is 71 yards north of Angas Street.

A view along O'Connell Street from the north end looking south. The Caledonian Hotel, publican E. Bailey, is at right behind the horse-drawn tram. Two other trams from Enfield are going in to Adelaide. The three trams are stopped on the 'balloon loop' which the North Adelaide trams used to turn around. Later the balloon loop was replaced by a turntable to avoid wear ib the tram wheel, and horse trams were extended to propsect and Nailsworth.
