Album containing portraits of Meyer and Lovelock family members. Kelly, Genery, Herbert, Polhill, Sanders, Clayton, Ramsay, Gerrard and other families are included. Some families appear to be from the Yankalilla area. It is not known who compiled the album. To view images, take the Browse Album link. The album provides examples of carte-de visite and cabinet portraiture of many Adelaide photographers of the 1870s to 1890s, as well as good examples of the clothing and dress fashion of the day. The photographers are noted in brackets after the caption, where they are known. Photograph 26 shows a person in military uniform with a distinctive pill box cap, possibly the uniform of the Mounted Volunteer Corps of the Volunteer Militia. The album has a hand sewn cream suede cover, with rudimentary embroidery done in an acorn and leaf pattern. Additional research was carried out by Anthony Laube, who believes the album probably belonged to Mrs Lovelock. His additional information is shown in square brackets.

Album of 38 carte-de-visite and tintype photographs of the Kerr and Collins families. Some are named: 3. Mr E.J. Wivell, teacher of dancing & calisthenics; 28. Grandmother Collins; 31 & 33. John Thomas Collins, wife Margaret and sons Bruce, Walter, Percy and Thomas. (Some photographs taken in Melbourne.) Cover is ornate with metal decoration and brass clasp. The album has the inscription 'To Janet Kerr from her devoted friend William Sutherland as a Christmas Gift 25 December 1865'. The front page has 2 newspaper death notices, for Grace Kerr, daughter of Stair Kerr aged 64 years at Prospect (1917), and William Howard, husband of Eliza Howard, aged 68 years at 'Alsted Farm', Alma. The album bears the owner's name plate 'Mr J.T. Collins, Maitland'.

Photographs of several historic houses, Montefiore, Fairfield, Springbrook and Collingrove, cattle and prize winning sheep are included. Some photographs are attributable to photographers, Samuel White Sweet, Townsend Duryea and H. Davis. Some of the photographs are duplicated elsewhere in the Pictorial Collection.

Album of the Hawkes Family, possibly containing photographs of Hawkes, Stebbing and Whittington families, and English relatives and siblings of Henry Hawkes and Francis William Hawkes, who married Mary Jane Whittington. The donor, Clifford Henry Hawkes, born 1898, indicated that the album belonged to his grandfather, Henry Hawkes. The album includes a one page family tree of Clifford Hawkes, compiled by the State Library, photographs of the original album (which has not been retained), several in memoriam cards (photos 56-59), and two Children's League certificates, belonging to Clifford Hawkes and Harold Hawkes. Most photographs are un-captioned, and a small selection have been digitised. The album is an interesting source of examples of carte-de visite and cabinet print portrait photography, along with one tintype photograph, by studios in Adelaide in the nineteenth century. 60 photographs of Kathleen Alice Finniss and her family including her father John Henry Suffield Finniss, mother Alice Evelyn Finniss, brothers Harold Court Finniss, Leslie Howard Finniss and George Hassard Finniss. The photographs are predominantly created by Hammer and Co. portraiture studio, ranging in date from approximately 1883-1915. Papers include one pamphlet entitled "When Adelaide was Very Young: Trials and Hardships of the Pioneers.", written by George Morphett and published by the Pioneer's Society of South Australia circa 1950, at The Advertiser Printing Office, Adelaide, South Australia (which became The Griffin Press, circa 1954), and a newspaper obituary article for William Charles Maxwell Finniss 1842-1919, one of the 8 children of Boyle Travers Finniss.

Hughes' Pumping Engine House at Moonta Mines - engine was made by Harvey and Company of Hayle, Cornwall, 1863. Erected about that date and worked continuously to November 1923. Drained the whole of underground workings on the main line of Elders and Elders West Lodes. Diameter of steam cylinder 60 inches. This classic Cornish engine house was constructed alongside Hughes Shaft by John Beaglehole between late 1863 and early 1865. It was named after Walter Watson Hughes, the founder of the Moonta Mining Company.

Bower's winding engine house. Was used for hauling from Greens and Gergussons shafts. Prince Edward and George (King GeorgeV) were taken underground at Greens shaft at Moonta. The driver of the engine on that occasion was Thomas Trezise c. 1881. The princes aged 17 and 15 were training as midshipmen on HMS Bacchante which arrived in Albany. They crossed to South Australia on a passenger vessel. Part of their reply to the welcome speech included the following "Sons of the Duke of Cornwall, who has bade us say how much he regrets not yet himself to have visited your colony, we rejoiced at Moonta to find ourselves in the midst of so many miners and true hearted Cornishmen".

Result of boiler explosion at Beddomes engine house, Moonta Mines. The shell of the boiler was carried a considerable distance before landing on a Miner's Cottage. A man named Jose was killed at the Moonta Mines after he was lighting the boilers connected to the Beddomes engine and forgot to turn the throttle valve on No. 1 boiler.

Richman's Engine House and Ore Concentrating plant. Stone building was completed in 1870. Length of stone building 42 feet, height 46 feet. The enginehouse was built between 1867 and 1869 using stone from Moonta Beach. It was used for crushing and concentrating ore from nearby shafts.

Machine Shops at the Mines, employed 300 hands at peak period. By 1875 Moonta was the second largest town in South Australia and the largest copper region in the British Empire. Moonta Mines area had a population of 5,000 residents.

"Glen Para", Mt. Crawford

'Glen Para' residence built by David Erskine Randall (1819-1874) NNE of Mt. Crawford. The original was painted by his wife, Eliza Drake Randall, nee Wickes (1819-1902), probably in the 1860s. The single storey stone house built in 1851, was later purchased by William Rounsevell (1816-1874) who added a square tower to the house and called it Corryton Park. Notes on the back of photograph state: Erected by David Randall probably in the 1850's. Sections 1120, 670 and 1119 in Hundred of Barossa, marked the northern boundary of the property (a miles or two NNE of Mount Crawford) The house was built on land owned by C Flaxman who was a representative for George Angas Fife.
