A new railway carriage being built at Islington Workshops, South Australian Railways

A new railway carriage being built at Islington Workshops, South Australian Railways

A new railway carriage being built at coachbuilder Duncan and Fraser's factory. A researcher has provided the following information: Duncan and Fraser was a well-known coach builder and built railway carriages, horse-drawn vehicles, horse trams, electric trams, and motor bodies, especially for model T Fords. Originally in Franklin Street, they later built a factory at Woodville, later taken over by Holden Body Builders. Another researcher has provided the following information: "According to the National Railway Museum Port Adelaide the photo was taken at Islington Workshops in 1908. The clerestory car on the right was one of 10 cars built for the SAR in 1908 for use on the Glenelg lines. These all had 10' 6" wide bodies and were all converted to Centenary Cars in the 1936 conversions. Two of the cars were baggage cars numbered 268 and 269, so my guess is that the car in the photo is one of these two cars. Car 268 was used as a buffet car on the Centenary Ltd for a short time. It is now preserved at the Broken Hill Railway Museum. The remaining cars in the photo are all narrow gauge "short tom" cars with two central windows for the toilet, six windows either side of the toilet on each side and one window each side of the door in each end. These cars were numbered in the series 157 to 170 and they all entered service around 1908. Flinders, Sturt etc [at Pichi Richi Railway] are examples of this type of car. According to the SAR records, none of the cars mentioned above were built by Duncan and Fraser. Duncan and Fraser did build some Glenelg cars, but nowhere near the timeline for the narrow gauge cars listed above".

Diary of Helen Una Grieve

Diary of Helen Una Grieve

A leather-bound diary which follows Helen Una Grieve's life between July 28th, 1909 and September 20th, 1909. The diary contains extremely detailed entries including 117 (D 7872(L)/1 - D 7872(L)117), mostly labeled, photographs, referring to handwritten diary entries. There is an interesting inclusion of pressed native flowers (D 7872(L)/118 - D 7872(L)/130), which have been carefully labeled and attached to the last pages of the diary, along with a feather and an example of scoured wool from Yancannia Station. In addition to the diary, the collection also includes a letter written from Morden on 28th December (no year given) by Tarella, and a telegram to 'Miss Grieve' from 'Milne', 1909. Grieve enjoyed a country lifestyle and was witness to her family's sheep and cattle station dealings as well as camel trains across the desert areas between Adelaide and Broken Hill. It is most likely the author of the diary is also the photographer. The photographs record the contemporary environment including costume, homesteads and garden designs. Grieve has effectively captured her experience through her comments and especially through her unique photographs. The photographer shows competent photographic technique and many examples are perspectival in composition. There are also included sentimental and affectionate photographic depictions of pets and other animals. Helen Una Grieve refers to herself as the "country girl" or the "girl" throughout the diary. Some terminology, which is offensive by today's standards, reflects usage at that time. [Married name was Gibson.]

Reverend Arthur M. Trengove : SUMMARY RECORD

Records of the Reverend Arthur M. Trengove comprising approximately 1300 lantern slides and glass plate negatives. To a lesser extent there are nitrate negatives and prints. The majority were created in South Australia and document the landscape and his activities as Reverend. Items include images of the following areas; Mid North and Flinders Ranges, Eyre Peninsula (including Cowell, Franklin Harbour, Hissey's Creek, Coonarie Falls, Winnowing, Arno Bay, Port Lincoln), Adelaide Botanic and Zoological Gardens, Port Elliot and Hindmarsh River, Beetaloo Reservoir, Bundaleer, Prince Alfred College, Mount Gambier, River Murray, Mannum and Renmark. Trengove spent time abroad in both New Zealand and during World War 1 in Egypt. Both trips are documented. There are also many family portraits, mainly taken during the mission years in northern South Australia. There are items of interest including a wooden and metal gas lantern slide projector and wooden frames for the slides, used in projection. There is a decorative light projection device with a prism-like light refractor which would have been used for creating patterned and coloured light presentations.
