Summary

Half-plate glass negative of two Australian Victoria Cross recipients, Corporals Reginald Roy Inwood and Jorgen Christian Jensen, wearing World War One uniforms, including slouch hats, standing outdoors. This photograph may have been taken on 18 October 1918 upon their arrival in Adelaide from active service overseas, possibly at Government House. General notes

One of a collection of glass plate negatives of South Australian soldiers, likely produced in metropolitan Adelaide from late 1914 to 1916. The majority of the images are single portraits and demonstrate a wide variety of uniforms, accoutrements and weapons, including swords and rifles with and without fixed bayonets, and various backdrops including outdoors, against buildings, and studio shots with a rural idyll woodland background. Included are portraits of men in twos or groups of three or more, some with wives and sometimes children and parents. Some portraits feature warhorses, senior offices, a quartermaster, and the crew of a West Spring Gun. The original paper envelopes of a number of the glass plates have survived, providing the name of the soldier along with details of the types and quantities of prints ordered. One of the envelopes gives details of the maker, Edwards and Errington of 52 Flinders Street, Adelaide. See B 74889-B 75011, B 75104.

Historical information

No. 506 Corporal Reginald Roy Inwood, son of Edward and Mary Ann (nee Minney), born in 1890, worked as a miner in Broken Hill before he enlisted on 24 August 1914, aged 24. He served with the 10th Battalion, H Company, and embarked from Adelaide on board the A11 'Ascanius' on 20 October 1914. He served in Egypt, Gallipoli, and the Western Front, was promoted to Corporal, and was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1918 for bravery and devotion to duty in capturing an enemy strong-post and prisoners in September 1917. He had two brothers who also served in the war, No. 320 Private Harold Ray Inwood, 43rd Battalion, and No. 1533 Sergeant Robert Minney Inwood, 10th Battalion, killed in action 24 July 1916. Reginald Inwood died on 23 October 1971 and is buried in the West Terrace Cemetery.

No. 2389 Corporal Joergen Christian Jensen, son of Joergen Christian Jensen, a farmer, and Christina Sorensen, born in Loegstoer in Denmark in 1892, was working as a labourer at Morgan and Port Pirie before he enlisted with the AIF on 23 March 1915. He served with the 10th Battalion, 6th Reinforcement, and embarked with his unit from Adelaide aboard the HMAT A30 'Borda' on 23 June 1915. He served in Egypt, Gallipoli, and the Western Front, was transferred to the 50th Battalion, promoted to Corporal, and was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery and initiative when attacking an enemy barricade in France in April 1917. He died on 31 May 1922 and is buried in the West Terrace Cemetery.
