Hermannsburg was established in 1877 at a sacred site known as Ntaria. It was conceived as an Aboriginal mission by two Lutheran missionaries - A Hermann Kemp and Wilhelm F Schwarz. who had travelled overland from Bethany in the Barossa Valley.

Ernestine Hill was an Australian journalist, travel writer and novelist. During the 1930s she travelled extensively around Australia and became a close friend of Daisy Bates

Killalpaninna Mission
Aboriginal people at Killapaninna Mission Station. The Lutheran church pioneered this Bethesda Mission on the Birdsville Track near Lake Killalpaninna. The mission was later extended to an outstation on the shore of Lake Kopperamanna. Lake Killalpaninna is about 40 kms south of Coopers Creek. The missions fell into decline and were closed by the government in 1915. The photograph shows Aboriginal men and women sitting on the ground next to a stone building. Aboriginal men decorated with paint, government officials and Australian Defence Force officers stand at attention front of the Adelaide War Memorial for an Indigenous Veterans Service held on 30th May 2008 to honour Aboriginal servicemen and women who served their country from the Boer War through to present day conflicts. It is estimated that about 500 Aboriginal Australians served in World War I and more than 3,000 served in World War II.
