A collection of 329 photographs of people, events and places on the Eyre Peninsula and west coast of South Australia. Places include Port Lincoln, Boston Bay, Kirton Point, Proper Bay, Warner, Myalpa Beach, Tod River, Lake Hamilton, Sleaford Bay, Woolshed Cave, Talia, Streaky Bay, Back Beach, Ceduna, Koonibba, Point Sinclair, Port Le Hunte, Penong, Kooringibbie Well. The album contains photographs documenting the Back to Port Lincoln Carnival celebrations, 7-14 February 1930; photographs taken at Ceduna of the Western Australian Centenary Air Race 1929 (also known as the East- West Air Race); the refuelling stop at Ceduna of the inaugural flight of Air Mail services between Adelaide and Perth 1929 and the 130th Anniversary of the Landing of Matthew Flinders at Boston Bay, 26 February 1932. A number of sailing ships and motor vessels visiting Boston Bay between 1929 and 1933 were photographed, among them SS Melbourne, Olive Bank, Hougomont, Viking, MV Phasianella, Minnipa, King Stephen, Moonta, Rhymney, L'Avenir, Grootekerk and the new aircraft carrier HMAS Albatross which was first commissioned in 1929. The photographs include some interesting images of farming and transportation on the far west coast of South Australia, and show glimpses of the lives of Aboriginal people at that time at Poonindie Mission, Koonibba Mission, Fowler's Bay and Ceduna region. The photographs in this collection were taken by E. F. Derbyshire during the years 1929-1933, when he as a commercial traveller for Clarkson Limited of Adelaide, suppliers of builders' tools and hardware. Album of views partly of South Australia, with some photographs attributable to the photographer Captain Samuel White Sweet. Views include street scenes in Adelaide and at the Botanic Gardens, Waterfall Gully, Morialta, and Strathalbyn. Several photographs may be of Aboriginal men and women of the Point McLeay area. The album includes nineteenth century views of Melbourne, Launceston & Hobart, Brisbane and Maryborough in Queensland and other places abroad including Ceylon, Malta, New Caledonia, and New Zealand. Some of these are by the noted photographers, Horatio Agius (Malta), Poul C. Poulsen (Queensland) and Allan Hughan (New Caledonia). Darian Smith, with the remainder strongly attributed to the photographer. On comparison with SLSA images of Hermannsburg and the Aranda (Arrernte/Aranta), it is possible that the location of the images is Alice Springs, Terowie, Finke River and McDonnell Ranges area (see PRG 1559/8/1-295).

An album and scrapbook initially kept by Jane McColl, daughter of James Ramsay McColl, showing the family and family home 'Largs Villa' at Woodville, her father and his employees in the marine plumbing business at Port Adelaide, and her brothers and cousins, some of whom found work on coastal steamers around Australia, including ports in Queensland, Sydney, Albany and Wyndham in Western Australia. The album was lent for copying and the State Library does not hold the original.

Series comprises approximately 18,000 black and white negatives including contact prints made from each negative and the envelopes in which the negatives were orginally housed, plus miscellanous unnumbered prints (damaged), possibly used for publications or presentations. The content includes a broad range of subjects with most images taken during expeditions to Ayers Rock [Uluru], Mount Olga [Kata Tjuta] and Yuendumu in Central Australia, Warburton Ranges, Nepabunna Mission Station in the Northern Flinders Ranges, Arnhem Land, Melville Island and the North West of Western Australia. Also includes images from the Expedition to search for the remains of explorer Ludwig Leichhardt and the 'Commonwealth Board of Enquiry into the alleged ill-treatment of Aborigines near Ayers Rock'. Records of the Reverend Arthur M. Trengove comprising lantern slides, glass plate negatives and nitrate negatives of logging and scrub rolling, reaping and agricultural scenes, including working horses. Also including images of Aboriginal families of the Eyre Peninsula area, photographed by Rev. Trengove at this time. Trengrove was transferred to Cowell after the Wilmington circuit and became interested in land clearing, and the shipping of wheat. See CONTENTS for more information and details of images.

R.T. Maurice's expedition party

Expedition party featuring five gentlemen and a dog. Standing : 'Karraminya', 'Nunjena', 'Napparinya'. Sitting : William Richard Murray and Richard Thelwell Maurice. Murray and Maurice partook of an exploratory expedition to Central Australia in 1902 from Fowler's Bay to Wyndham on Cambridge Gulf, relying on Aboriginal guides to map springs and waterholes throughout north-western South Australia. They left an anthropological and exploratory record of the event.

GENERAL: The grave of the Reverend George Taplin who died in 1879; Aboriginal men standing mourning in the background. The inscription on the gravestone reads" Sacred to the memory of The Rev. George Taplin, missionary for 20 years to the Aborigines of South Australia and founder of the Point MacLeay Mission. Died June 24th 1879 aged 47 years. We thank thee that the way-worn sleeps, the sleep in Jesus blest, the purified and ransomed soul, hath entered into rest. Erected by the Aborigines".

Five of the slides require special permission for viewing due to their cultural sensitivity. Another two slides require permission from an archivist.
