Built 1868 J Fullerton and Co. Paisley. 1 deck and break deck, round stern. Owners: John and David Spence (of Greymouth, NZ and Melbourne) registered Melbourne: December 1873 M Kennedy (Greymouth); January 1889 A Hatrick (Wanganui): December 1904 GT Niccol (Auckland) and J Stewart (Helensville): Sept. 1906 E Mitchelson and F Jagger (Auckland) and registration transferred to Auckland in 1908. Converted into a lighter and registeration closed in 1929. (NB while registered in Australia, she was never an Australian owned ship, and therefore in the wrong section - note from Parsons) Always employed in New Zealand waters, with visits to Australia].

The wooden schooner 'Alma Doepel', 131 tons, in an unidentified port. [wood 3 mast schooner - no later than 1917, became auxiliary engined 150g. 117n tons. ON117640 105.0 x 26.6 x 7.6. Aux engine 40hp. fitted c. 1917. Then re-engined c.1937 and converted to twin screw during WW2 and these twin engines replaced about 1955. Converted into a barge in 1960 for limestone. Sold in 1976 to Melbourne owners for restoration as a sail training ship and efforts made to refit to her original condition. Was reduced from three masts to two masts fore and aft rig in 1937. Built 1903 F. Doepel, Bellinger River NSW. Owneers: F. Doepel reg. Sydney 1917. Rahra and Co. Ltd. (subsidiary of Henry Jones) reg. Hobart 1940 Alma Doepel P/L (Jones subsidiary) Taken by USA forced during WW2; returns to Henry Jones after the War, until sold for private use in 1976. Usually claimed to be the last square rigged sailing ship built in Australia.]

'Cutty Sark' loading wool at Sydney in the 1880's, Circular Quay South, looking north west, [composite ship, 963 gross tons. ON63557. 212.5 x 36.0 x 21.6. Built 1869 (11) Scott and Linton, Dumbarton. Owners John Willis and Son, registered London. (The shipbuilders went bankrupt in the course of constructing the ship and it was completed by Denny Bros) Sold 1895 to Portuguese and renamed Ferreira. Bought in 1922 by Captain Dowman of Falmouth, named and restored and re-rigged to her original sail plan. Presented to the Thames Nautical Training College in 1938. Subsequently installed in a dry dock at Greenwich on permanent display. This vessel has probably had more written about her than any other sailing ship, including 'The Log of the Cutty Sark' by Lubbock, see for full details up to 1938. The name is taken from a poem by Burns - Tam O'Shanter and the best translation appears to be 'short chemise'. Built for the China trades and considered to be among the world's fastest sailing ships. she was transferred to the Australian trades in 1885-6, trading mainly to Sydney, until she made a few voyages to Brisbane in the 1890's prior to being withdrawn and sold foreign. The iron schooner 'Wortanna', 213 tons, in an unidentified harbour [built as the iron paddle steam tug 'Albatross', sold and renamed Dec. 1918 and converted - iron auxiliary schooner, 213 gross, 163 net tons. ON74654, 131.4 x 21.1 x 10.4. Built 1875 Barclay, Curle and Co. Glasgow. 1918 = 8 cyl oil engine. Owners: WJ Wardle (Adelaide), registered Mlebourne; 1918 Frank A Verco; 1920 Victor Reeves (Hobart); 1921 Cairns Timber Ltd.; June 1922 Adelaide Steamship Co. Ltd. and altered into a sugar lighter. Requisitioned by US Forces in WW2. Then returned to owners, no longer described as auxiliary schooner, but twin screw motor ship. Stranded near the entrance to Mourilyan Harbour, Queensland and declared a constructive total loss. See 'The Adelaide Line' by Parsons, July 1975].

In April 1889 John P Oakes, registered Auckland who in 1890 transferred the ship to Newcastle, NSW. Sold in April 1891 to Robert B Wallace: Dec. 1892 sold to Herbert and John Dawson (32) and Thomas Richards (32), registered Auckland; 1897 Joseph Westen, registered Sydney: who sells to Warburton and Sons. Sold to shipbreakers about 1918. Used as a collier, and probably later as a coal kulk, from at least 1897].

Sydney 1912. sold Union SS Co. of NZ Ltd. and converted to a coal hulk for use in Hobart. Ron Parsons cannot locate any vessel to fit this description (ie steel 1913) There was an iron hulk of this name in Fremantle (1076 tons) between 1913 - 1948].
