Moorook Village Settlement
Moorook village settlement, River Murray 20 November 1894. This was one of thirteen communal settlements known as village settlements. They were created to ease the economic depression following the major strikes in the 1890's and the bank crash of 1893. Socialist ideas became popular and utopian schemes were appealing to the unemployed and those struggling to make ends meet.

Morphettville Race Course and grandstand. Sir Thomas Elder funded the South Australian Jockey Club to enable it to own its own freehold property of 160 acres at Morphettville. The first meeting was held at these premises in 1876. In 1889 the first Adelaide Cup to be run at Morphettville and was won by "The Lawyer" . The previous Adelaide Cup race was run at Flemington and then abandoned for four years

[General description] This view shows a white mill silhouetted against the sky and standing in a clearing with a few trees and scrub in the background. The mill, on Windmill Hill, Mt. Barker Road was built by F.R. Nixon in 1842 but changed hands soon after. Milling ceased in 1864 and in 1890 the sails were burned in a bushfire.

The more ornate right side was added on later. See BRG 347/1846-1854 for a series of photos of this building being demolished on 20th February, 1963, and also of the construction of its replacement. "Pine Hill", Mt. Gambier, the home of the Barrows family. William Barrows, sheep grazier, was a colonist of 73 years and had lived in the Mount Gambier district for 66 years. He arrived in South Australia onboard the "Pestonjee Bomanjee in 1854 and built a house at Mount Lofty. He was married to Lucy Jane Cobbledick and took his bride by bullock dray to Mount Gambier. Son William James and Beatrice Mary Barrows of Pine Hill on the Penola Road had three children. William Laurence Barrows, Olga (nee Barrows) McGowan and James Bryce Barrows. William James Barrows was also a sheep grazier.
