Historical information

No. 3434 Private Fred Furness Whitehead, born in South Australia, son of Harry Andrew Whitehead of Gilberton, South Australia, worked as a farmer before he enlisted with the AIF on 27 March 1917 at the age of 27. He served with the 9th Light Horse Regiment, 29th Reinforcement, and embarked with his unit from Melbourne on board the HMAT A55 'Kyarra' on 7 September 1917, serving in Egypt. He returned to Australia on 8 April 1919.
