Summary

Portrait in pastels on brown paper of a woman seated at a piano, one hand resting on the keys, dressed in a dark dress with white lace trimmings at the neck and sleeve edges. The lady is believed to be Jane Elphistone Muirhead, sister to Henry McKinnon Muirhead. An artist's signature and date sits in the bottom right corner. The original framer's label remains on the reverse, which reads 'Finlay; Carver, Gilder & Printseller; Bookseller & Stationer to the King, No. 49 Buchanan Street, Glasgow'. A conservation report by Artlab Australia states that the paper has most likely darkened over time, which unintentionally intensifies the contrast of the white highlights within the work. Horizontal lines across the paper are believed to have resulted from a processing problem with the paper, which has become visible over time.
