Summary

From back of photograph: 'Photograph taken at the Adelaide Hospital c.1904. The lady with the wide hat was Miss Mary Ann Whimpress, a domestic servant in a home in The Avenue, Medindie, who was about to leave hospital after one of the first operations for appendicitis. The girl in the dark dress seated in the second chair from the left had been 'scalped' by belting [?] in an Adelaide factory and is wearing a wig. Donated by Mrs A.M. Kelly a daughter of Miss Whimpress.'

Historical information

'Mrs Kelly had been staying in a boarding house in Port Elliot. She was then aged 16. She went with a party to Goolwa, where they all embarked on a launch which took them to Point McLeay. After landing at the jetty, they were taken to the school room, where they were shown the children practising writing. She was very impressed with the writing. After recess the school fife band played a number of pieces, after which the tourists walked around taking photographs. These are the photographs she took. She was amazed, at the time, that the children did not seem to be worried by flies settling round their eyes.' [From information supplied along with the photographs.] Raukkan was originally established as Point McLeay mission in 1859 and became an Aboriginal reserve in 1916. It was finally handed back to the Ngarrindjeri people in 1974, and renamed Raukkan in 1982.
