The sandstone building has decorative wooden eaves, a steep slate roof and deep verandah. A two storey brick building, part of the University of Adelaide precinct, stands adjacent with its tile roof and fire escape.

The Old Mounted Police Barracks at the back of the South Australian Museum on North Terrace in Adelaide. The building has twin eaves with a balcony on the first floor and a single staircase leading down to the courtyard. The right-hand side of of the structure has since been demolished.


'Old Barracks Gateway'
Sandstone and red brick arch, which is the gateway to the Old Mounted Police Barracks situated on North Terrace behind the South Australian Museum and Art Gallery. Buildings of the Destitute Asylum and a long picket fence can be seen through the gateway.
