Historical information

James Goodes was born in approximately 1837 in England, and arrived in South Australia on board the 'Fatima' on 11 June 1850 with his parents William and Mary Goodes, and six siblings. He married Emily Robinson on 4 November 1858, and they had ten children: Selina (Lena), born 1859, married Rev. Thomas Whiteside Smyth in 1882; Martha born 1861, married John Thomas Noblett in 1882, died 1915; Thomas born 1862, married Ada Elizabeth Goodes in 1899; Mary Ann (Polly) born 1864, married Walter Graham in 1890, died in 1946; Caroline Amelia (Amelia), married William John Henry Burford in 1891, died 1928; Emily Florence (Flo), married William Frederick Laube in 1898, died 1964; James William (Will) born 1872, married Eleanor Ada Shellen in 1906, died 1954; Edith born 1874, married Joseph Owen Walker in 1899, died in 1947; Herbert Ernest born 1875, killed in the Boer War in 1901; and Fred Clarence born 1877, married Annie Mildred Naismith in 1909, died in 1922. Emily Goodes died on 30 January 1893, aged 54, and her husband James Goodes died at his home in Jamestown, on 6 September 1911, aged 75 years.
