Historical information

Jabez Frost and his wife Mary Ann Frost (nee Taylor) arrived in Australia on board the 'David Malcolm' on 23 March 1848, sailing from London via Plymouth. Jabez and Mary were one of the pioneers of the Manoora district in South Australia. They purchased land in Chinkford in 1855, and the first school building was erected on the Frost's property, just North of his farm buildings.

The original 163 square mile pastoral lease known as Manoora Sheep Station was taken up by A.W.T. Grant. The Hundred of Manoora was declared in 1851, and the first town here was laid out in 1853 and called Chinkford, sometimes referred to as Chingford. Chinkford was one of the watering places on one of the three main bullock dray routes down from the Burra mine. With the opening of the railway line as far as Tarlee it was recognised that growth would occur near the railway, and the new town of Manoora was laid out in 1867. This was north of Chinkford and adjoined the proposed route of the railway line.
