Postcard of English soldiers in Egypt.
Front of the postcard features a colour illustration of English soldiers in a military band, wearing uniforms and pith helmets, marching along a street in Egypt and playing instruments including drums and cymbols, while the local people watch from the sides of the street. On the reverse is a short message written in pencil to Phill's sister Edith Reid in Balaklava: 'Sept 16/9/15, Dear Sister, I am writing this P.C. in our dig out on side of hill. We are quite at home in the [barracks?] a few have been wounded. Love from Phill.' The back of the postcard is written over in scribble and notes, possibly made by a child.

On the reverse is a black and white photographic portrait of Edith Cavell and text describing her death. Handwritten message: 'Belgium, June 23/6/16. Dear Sister, what do you think of this sort of thing. Love Phill xx'.

The postcard is folded in half and opens up to twice the size of a regular postcard, with text 'Guerre 1914-1916', and featuring black and white photographs on the front, with the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Brebieres in Albert, France on the right, and on the left a photograph of the Basilica showing the destruction done to the building after 15 months of bombardment. Handwritten message on reverse: 'June 24/6/16. Dear Sister, Just a few hurried lines trusting you are all quite well as it leaves me at present. Please excuse short note. Fondest love, P.G. Pittaway'. And on the right is written at a later date: 'A card from Phil Pittaway to his siter, my mother, during 1st War. Effie Reid'.

Text at bottom 'Sara cosi? Sera - t - il comme ca? The end of it all'. On the reverse is a handwritten message addressed to his sister Edith, Mrs J.C. Reid, Balaklava, South Australia. 'France, 13th Aug 16. My Dear Sister, I was delighted to receive your letter of the 26th June, and to know that you are all so well at home. I am enjoying the best of health and getting on fine. Things in general are rolling merrily along with us. I was very sorry to hear of Mr. Partridge's death. Remember me to Dad, and tell him that I am keeping well. Give my love to all. From your Loving Brother Phill.'
