Historical information

Philip George Pittaway was born in 1890 to George Francis Pittaway and Jane (nee Hunt). He worked as a labourer in Balaklava, South Australia, before enlisting on 14 January 1915 at the age of 24. No. 171 Private Philip George Pittaway served with the 27th Battalion, A Company, embarking from Adelaide on board the HMAT A2 'Geelong' on 31 May 1915. He served in Egypt and Gallipoli for three months before being sent to France in March 1916. He was killed in action on 5 November 1916 in France during the 27th Battalion's attack on German positions in Flers, and has no known grave.
