Historical information

The accident occurred on 24 June 1944 and resulted in the deaths of three peole: Clifford Mowbray, aged 32 and his 12-month-old son Peter Anthony Mowbray both died on 24 June, and Colin's wife Winifred Elsie Mowbray, aged 33, died on 1 July 1944 as a result of injuries sustained in the accident. Colin and Winnie's nine-year-old son, Colin John Mowbray, survived the crash. He spent nine months in hospital suffering multiple injuries, and was not told of the deaths of his family until six months after the accident.
