Historical information

Well-known Adelaide lawyer, Mr Francis George Scammell, bought a 54 acre property in Douglas's Gully on the north-eastern outskirst of McLaren Vale, which he named 'Inverness'. He purchased the property in May 1911 and worked there weekends, as a hobby away from the demands of legal work, transforming the property by clearing the land and developing it to grow crops. During the work the 'Willunga Marine Bed' was discovered while digging a well. Orchards were developed, with currants, grapes and prunes, apples and citrus fruits, quince and walnut trees, and a large evaporating plant was built to dry fruit. The property also contained blacksmith and carpenter shops, a fruit storing room, woodshed, and a main homestead made of ironstone and slate roof, with a flower garden. Francis Scammell also constructed roads and bridges on his property, in cooperation with the local district council. PRG 1508/14/1/20: Western end of 8 acre block of Zante currants planted in September 1911. These rows are 30 chains long. There are 28 rows 12ft apart. The vines are 10ft apart. Cut 64 tons currants off this block March 1921. The vines in the foreground are Dorradilla.
PRG 1508/14/1/21: Portion of the eastern end of 8 acre block of Zante currants.
PRG 1508/14/1/22: Block of 200 Duchess pear trees planted in September 1911.
