Summary

The wooden ship 'Northfleet', 895 tons, moored in The Thames [wooden ship, 895 tons. ON11967, 180.0 x 32.3 x 20.0. Built 1853, Northfleet. Owners: J Patton, jnr., registered London (when in the China trades) Built for Duncan Dunbar but sold upon his death. While anchored at Dungeness outbound with migrants for Tasmania she was cut down by an unknown steamer with the loss of 293 lives, 22 January 1873. The vessel causing the damage was later identified as a Spanish ship].

General notes

One of the ships known as the Tea Clippers and China Traders.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
