Summary

Shipping at Sydney, with the barque 'Altcar' in the background. Sydney Town Hall and St. Andrew's Cathedral are visible on the horizon indicating that location is somewhere on the western side of Darling Harbour. [steel 3 mast barque, 1283gross tons ON 50473, 209.5 x 36.0 x 23.6. Built 1864 (8) Jones, Quiggin & Co. Liverpool for owners in Liverpool 1881 - James Ewan, registered Sydney: 1888 Alexander Burns. In 1896 sold to Italian owners without change of name. (Sometimes incorrectly claimed to be the first steel hulled ship. Possibly first LARGE steel hulled vessel.)]
