Summary

One of the first steel vessels, the steel barque 'Altcar', 1283 tons, in an unidentified port. [steel 3 mast barque, 1283gross tons ON 50473, 209.5 x 36.0 x 23.6. Built 1864 (8) Jones, Quiggin & Co. Liverpool for owners in Liverpool 1881 - James Ewan, registered Sydney: 1888 Alexander Burns. In 1896 sold to Italian owners without change of name. (Sometimes incorrectly claimed to be the first steel hulled ship. Possibly first LARGE steel hulled vessel.)]

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
