Summary

Circular Quay, Sydney in 1875 with S.S. 'Whampoa' [iron single screw steamship, 3855 gross, 2487 net tons, ON68517. 399.5 x 42.2 x 28.4. Built 1873 (10) Palmer's S & I Co. Jarrow upon Tyne. Compound engine, 500hp. Owners: Watts, Milburn and Co., registered London. Certificate to carry 315 passengers. Sold 1881 to Italian owners and renamed 'Manilla'. The first vessel of the 'Colonial Line' of steamers to arrive in Australia. See 'North Star to Southern Cross' Maber. 1967]

This section comprises scenes of Circular Quay 1870-1890.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
