Summary

The iron barque 'Ansdell', 298 tons, in an unidentified port. [wooden 3 masted bq, 293 tons in 1876. 280 tons. ON37029, 120.9 x 27.3 x 12.6. Built 1854 at Franklin, USA and named FS Mearns. Owners: (first time in Australia 1874) William Wells, reg. Port Adelaide: April 1875 George Hewison. Registered Newcastle, NSW: May 1875 James Cole Ellis, Dec. 1885 N. McLeod, reg. Melbourne: Nov, 1903 JT Anderson: Dec. 1911 Victorian Lighterage Pty. Ltd. Broken up and register closed in 1915. Hulked probably in 1885. Ron Parsons has noted the caption says iron bq. He thinks the vessel is most definitely built of wood.

From the volume titled 'Australian Owned Sailing Vessels'.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
