The iron ship 'Wairoa', 1128 tons, in an unidentified harbour. Also refer to print PRG 1373/30/92 [iron 3 mast ship rigged; altered to a barque after sale and renaming. 1057 gross tons. ON73621. 204.1 x 34.2 x 20.0. Built 1875 (11) Palmers Co. Newcastle upon Tyne. Owners: New Zealand Shipping Co. Ltd., registered London. c.1900 to Russians who renamed the vessel 'Winnipeg'. She sailed from Pensacola, USA with a cargo of timber in 1907 bound for Buenos Ayres, but went missing].

General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

Vessels owned by the New Zealand Shipping Co. Ltd., London, were employed in the England to New Zealand passenger and cargo trade. General cargo was taken to New Zealand and wool, grain and other Colonial produce formed the homeward cargo.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
