Summary

The iron ship 'Mataura' ex 'Dunfillan', 853 tons, in an unidentified harbour [iron 3 mast ship, converted to a 3 mast barque c.1880/1. 898 gross, 853 net tons. ON60398, 199.4 x 33.3 x 20.3. Built 1868 (12) Aitken and Mansel, Glasgow as 'Dunfillan' for William Ross, Glasgow. Sold 1874 and renamed by New Zealand Shipping Co., registered London (registered at Lyttelton 1879-1888) Sold Feb. 1895 to Norwegian owners and renamed 'Alida'. Dismantled in the Pacific and abandoned in a sinking condition August 24, 1900].

General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

Vessels owned by the New Zealand Shipping Co. Ltd., London, were employed in the England to New Zealand passenger and cargo trade. General cargo was taken to New Zealand and wool, grain and other Colonial produce formed the homeward cargo.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
