The iron barque 'Glenlora', 774 tons, in an unidentified harbour [iron ship, re-rigged as 3 mast barque, c.1880 764 gross and net tons. ON50084. 192.2 x 31.2 x 18.4. Built 1864 (7) T Vernon and Son, Liverpool. Owners: T Stenhouse, reigstered London. c.1872/3 Shaw Savill and Co: who later became Shaw Savill and Albion Ltd. registered Southampton. c.1898 to Swedish owners without change of name. In 1918 was listed as being Norwegian owned. Well known New Zealand emmigrant trades].

General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

This is one of the ships owned by the The Shaw Savill & Albion Shipping Co. Ltd., formed by the amalgamation of two rival shipping firms: Shaw, Savill & Co., and Patrick Henderson's Albion Shipping Co. Their ships continued to engage in the New Zealand emigrant and cargo trade. Keen competition came from the New Zealand Shipping Co.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
