Summary

The iron barque 'Brussels', 991 tons, in an unidentified port. [iron ship 991 tons, ON45969, 211.3 x 31.9 x 21.5. Built 1863 (5) C. Connell and Co. Glasgow as City of Brussels for George Smith and Sons, registered Glasgow and c.1880 sold to N. Hogarth, reg. Glasgow and by 1885 sold to Hugh Hogarth registered at Ardrossan and renamed Brussels later passed to Shaw Savill and Co. and then Niger Co. Ltd.]

General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

This is one of the ships owned by the The Shaw Savill & Albion Shipping Co. Ltd., formed by the amalgamation of two rival shipping firms: Shaw, Savill & Co., and Patrick Henderson's Albion Shipping Co. Their ships continued to engage in the New Zealand emigrant and cargo trade. Keen competition came from the New Zealand Shipping Co.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
