Summary

The iron barque 'Himalaya', 1008 tons, in an unidentified port. Also refer to print PRG 1373/30/71 [iron ship, re-rigged c.1880 3 mast barque. 1008 gross and net tons, ON48594, 201.2 x 33.0 x 20.4. Built 1863 (11) Pile, Hay and Co. Sunderland. Owners: Gd Tyser, registered London, c.1873 Shaw, Savill and Co., who later became Shaw, Savill and Albion Ltd., registered Southampton. 1896 sold to JJ Moore and Co., registered San Francisco without change of name. Early 20th century sold to Alaska Packers Association and named changed to 'Star of Peru'. well known in the New Zealand emmigrant trade].

General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

This is one of the ships owned by the The Shaw Savill & Albion Shipping Co. Ltd., formed by the amalgamation of two rival shipping firms: Shaw, Savill & Co., and Patrick Henderson's Albion Shipping Co. Their ships continued to engage in the New Zealand emigrant and cargo trade. Keen competition came from the New Zealand Shipping Co.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
