Summary

The iron ship 'Euterpe', 1197 tons, in an unidentified port [iron ship, 1197 gross tons. ON47617, 205.5 x 35.2 x 23.4. Built 1863 (11) Gibson and Co. Ramsey. Owners David Brown, registered London, then Shaw, Savill and Co. (later Shaw, Savill and Albion) registered Southampton. c.1900-1910 sold to Chile and rigged as a barque, later sold to Alaska Packers Assoc. renamed 'Star of India' and registered San Francisco].

General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

This is one of the ships owned by the The Shaw Savill & Albion Shipping Co. Ltd., formed by the amalgamation of two rival shipping firms: Shaw, Savill & Co., and Patrick Henderson's Albion Shipping Co. Their ships continued to engage in the New Zealand emigrant and cargo trade. Keen competition came from the New Zealand Shipping Co.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
