Summary

The iron barque 'Scythia', 937 tons, docked in an unidentified port. Note that image PRG 1373/1/27 labelled 'Scythia' ca. 1876, 886 tons, is the same vessel. [As noted by researcher Cheryl Hill] [iron ship, 937 tons, ON58945, 196.9 x 32.7 x 20.5. Built 1868 (11) Bowdler, Chaffer and Co., Seacombe. Owners: William Nicol, registered Liverpool] The ship was built in 1868 and retained many of the features of wooden ships. Channels and chainplates may be seen and wooden stanchions and rails surround the poop deck and fo'c'sle head.

From the volume titled 'British Owned Iron and Steel Barques (II)'.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
